MX Player app developed by South Korea’s J2 Interactive which is easily the most popular video player on Android, has been reportedly acquired by the Times Internet Limited(TIL), according to The Ken. However the information is not yet verified, the informers are reaching out to the developers for confirmation of this news.
However, any possible acquisition might affect user experience such as additional premium content or increase in in-app adds. The confirmation for the above news will come out shortly after being verified by the company.
Times Internet is reportedly ready to pay a whopping $200 Million for the app. It is informed that the Times Internet Ltd. will very likely change the MX Player app into a video streaming platform rather than operating it as a standalone media player app.
Times Internet Ltd. is a well known app ecosystem in India with a slew properties ranging from those built-in house to those acquired- CricBuzz ( The biggest cricketing App), for example.
Times Internet is eager to step up into the video streaming market with not only MX Player in its mind, but also they are reaching out on apps like Hotstar and Netflix.
With Jio company’s introduction of JIO TV last year, Times Internet Ltd. is now looking to get MX Player in its bunch. MX Player has over 100 Million downloads as reported by Play Store which is also because it is an add-supported free application on play store. The MX Player Pro gets rid of adds and is worth Rs. 370 in India and $6 in the U.S. It is also unknown that after the deal between MX Player and Times Internet Ltd. whether these two apps will be available in the play store or not.
