Google Chrome Extensions

Browsing is something that takes the most part of the time of our day. These days, if one has a gadget, he better have an internet connection to actually “use” it. And if one has internet, what he does? Browsing, of course. Well technically, we use a “browsing client” for accessing the internet. We, in general, know them as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc. Google Chrome provides its users with support for Google Chrome Extensions, downloadable from the Google Chrome Web Store. Google Chrome Extensions are something that eases our browsing experience.

Today we shall look at not 1 but 5 most important Google Chrome Extensions, that one should definitely use.

Top 5 Google Chrome Extensions

5. Google Chrome Extensions: Stay Focusd

The internet is fun, I know. We plan to use it for 5 minutes, but after 5 minutes, we somehow time travel 1 hour or sometimes even more to the future :D. Well, out of all Google Chrome Extensions, Stay Focusd is what you are looking for. Stay Focusd limits your browsing hours on time-wasting websites. In this Google Chrome Extension, there are tonnes of features, including but not limited to max time allowed on a website, time to block a website after the timer expires, setting the active hours for the extension, etc. Long story short, Stay Focusd is one of the productivity Google Chrome Extensions which helps you to stay focused on your productive work. To start with, let’s learn how to install this thing:

Installation:

Google Chrome Extensions: Focused Installation
Focusd Installation
  1. Fire up Google Chrome(if not already) and open this link here which should land you to the Google Chrome Extensions page of the Chrome store.
  2. Click on [+ ADD TO CHROME] button. Wait for the download to get finish [333 KB (at the time of publishing this post)]. On download completion, chrome should automatically validate the file and install the extension.
  3. If everything goes well, chrome should notify you automatically about the successful installation.

Instructions:

  1. Just like many other Google Chrome Extensions, this one too needs to be initialized first to be used. To do that, you have to right-click on the Stay Focusd extension icon(it should be a blue coloured circular icon, with a small black clock over it). Now click on “Options”. It should take you to StayFocusd settings on the new tab.
  2. On the “Max Time Allowed” tab, set the total number of minutes you would like to spend on all unproductive website in a day. Set the time and click on “Set” button.
  3. Now go to the “Blocked Sites” tab and type in all the websites you would like to block, one after the other. For starters, I would suggest you click on “Check out this list” link to get all the potential time-wasting websites and click on “+” button to add the website of your choice to the list. A general format to block the whole website looks like “cnn.com” instead of “www.cnn.com“. Otherwise, all the instructions to block a website are mentioned on the “Blocked Sites” tab page. Don’t block us please :D.
  4. Get, Set, Go be productive ;).

4. Google Chrome Extensions: VPN Extensions

Being productive is a very nice thing to do, but what can you do when your government is blocking you from accessing a productive website. In India, according to the reports, till August 2015, 857 websites were blocked by the government. It would be safe to consider that this number has crossed 1000 by now. I believe that this decision is correct for a lot of those websites, but I also think that few of them doesn’t deserve it. If you somehow end up in a page blocked by the government, VPN Clients are here to the rescue.

VPN Clients or specifically a virtual private network (VPN) is a technology that creates a safe and encrypted connection over a less secure network, such as the internet. They were earlier developed to securely access remote computers/applications and was meant for corporate employees. Now with the growing technology and smart minds(like yours :D), they are used to access blocked websites as well.
Google Chrome Web Store also provides a no. of VPN extensions to its users. But so as per my choice, I consider “Unlimited Free VPN – Hola” OR “Hotspot Shield VPN Free Proxy – Unblock Sites” as the best amongst all. Let’s have a look to both of them one by one.

Google Chrome Extensions: Unlimited Free VPN – Hola

This is my favourite VPN extension out of all Google Chrome VPN Extensions available on the Google Chrome Web Store. The look, overall feel, as well as the performance, is superb. The best thing about this particular Google Chrome Extension is that it is free and doesn’t need any kind of sign up to make it work. There are a lot of locations to choose from and change your virtual location. The best part is none of the locations is locked, as generally seen in other Google Chrome extensions having the tag of VPN.

But, there is a CATCH! Once you choose a location of your choice, you are actually using the location resource of an actual user in that location who is also using this one along with other google chrome extensions. So, you are user as well as the resource. Meaning, if a user wants to change his/her geolocation to yours, this extension ‘may’ use your resources to make that happen. So, I generally don’t use this extension for a long time, and frankly, I don’t even need this for a long time in a single session. I would recommend you to use the extension the same way as I do.

Tip – Don’t use this Google Chrome Extension during online payments anytime. It’s not as secured as Hotspot Shield VPN

  1. If ever stuck on some blocked page, click on the Hola VPN icon. It should be an orange colour ‘fiery emoji with smiling face’, located on the top right corner to the left of the 3-dots settings panel(way too descriptive I know :D).
  2. Hola panel should pop up, and you would be asked to select a country. Select a country of your preference.
  3. Hola would take a little time to set up everything, and after a while, your web page should load without a problem.

Google Chrome Extensions: Hotspot Shield VPN Free Proxy – Unblock Sites

This is the Google Chrome Extension which you need to look out for if you need complete anonymity on the internet. Like Hola, this Google Chrome Extension also has a lot of countries (but smaller than the former Google Chrome Extension) to change your virtual location. But not all of them are free to use, some of them (like the United States) are locked, and can only be accessed by a paid subscription. Unlike Hola, this doesn’t use any of your resources for their services. It can also be used without any signing up.

My recommendation would be to use this Google Chrome Extension, only if you need its services for a longer time. For me, I generally use VPN for a shorter time (max. 10 minutes) and therefore prefer Hola to use due to its larger location database.

Comparison

If you are an online shopaholic who just can’t resist buying something, or just some regular guy buying out anything online, believe me, price comparison extensions are icing on the cake for you. They basically present its users with a price graph for any product of your choice. One can easily compare the current price with the whole curve to see the price trends. Let’s start with Keepa Google Chrome Extension.

This particular Google Chrome Extension is a price tracker meant for Amazon only, like Amazon.com, Amazon.in(for India), Amazon.ca, etc. Apart from the price history graphs, it can also compare prices between all the amazon domains and shows the best one for you. Sometimes on some websites, when we click on something, we are welcomed with a number of pop-ups of different advertisements which have no connection with the link we clicked. So, here I present you, best Pop Up Blocker among all such Google Chrome Extensions – Poper Blocker. They basically get rid of all the ad scripts running on a web page. And as a result, you get a cleaner, better-looking web page. Coming to the best, my choice would be “AdBlock Plus“. Let’s get the installation part over with first.
